About Paula

Paula Harrison is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, food and nutrition writer, and speaker, whose goal is to help people enjoy a plant-based diet, made up primarily of colorful whole foods that are tasty, satisfying, and health-promoting. She has a particular interest in the healing properties of foods and embraces an integrative approach to health and wellness. She believes that the body, mind, and spirit are integrally related, and the well-being of each supports the others.

Paula has over 19 years of experience in the nutrition field, having spent time counseling women on issues including gestational diabetes, pregnancy diets, high cholesterol, and weight control. She has taught nutrition courses at the college level since 1996; for 14 years she taught at William Paterson University in New Jersey as an Adjunct Instructor. Since 2011, she has been the lead instructor for the certificate program in Nutrition and Food Science at the University of Richmond School of Professional and Continuing Studies. Paula also manages a farm in rural Virginia, where she and her husband grow tomatoes, squash, beans, sweet potatoes, melons, and herbs. Each summer much of the produce is donated to local food banks.

Paula earned a bachelor's degree in Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She completed her master's degree in Clinical Nutrition as well as her dietetic training at New York University. She holds a Certificate of Training in Adult Weight Management from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and attends continuing education seminars regularly to keep up with the latest nutrition research findings. She is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Vegetarian Nutrition Dietetic Practice group. She also is a member of GRAND, the Greater Richmond Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and volunteers at their community events.

In her spare time, Paula likes to prepare meals with fresh-picked vegetables and herbs from the garden to share with family and friends. She also enjoys Pilates, yoga, and dance classes and long walks in the beauty of nature.
